What a find! Not only are these photographs amazing but they demolish the establishment narrative that the East End has always been a place of racial division. These historic and beautiful images could never have been taken by an outsider; Tex was clearly respected and loved by the community he lived in. I must have passed him on the street before he died in 1994.

These are brilliant and show how wrong many people are about immigration and its history here. I think you will find that, on the whole, we get along better than we are lead to believe. I, for one, would have liked a night in that Whitechapel club.

How awful that so many photographs were lost, but how important and how wonderful that some were saved.

These bring back such powerful memories for me of the East End I first arrived in 50 years ago. The mix of people, the parties, the – hard to explain – but the sense of security and warmth of our neighbourhoods. All gone now – at least in my part of Hackney. How I miss the East End that Tex Ajetunmobi photographed!
