I showed Brick Lane to a couple of Belgian tourists last Sunday, who were trying to locate it from their very poor guide book, explaining all the while the richness of the history. Passing those tower blocks and containers shops remembering fly tipping and the business of the flea market of old, nearly had me in tears!

I found this article about Richard Lee and the location of his business very interesting. An historical event that might be of interest: In 1841 my ancestor, George Francis French, a stone sawyer, was living at 32 Sclater Street together with his wife Mary & their 5 children. The parents of Mary, Joseph & Susan Wilson were living next door at No. 31.

If anyone can give an update on this story since it was first published some four months ago I would be very interested to hear it, Richard left the market back in the middle of May and at the time I made a little presentation of a leaving gift myself at the end of the day and took great care to make sure that Richard was provided with my latest contact details, we shook hands and said our farewells and off Richard went, since then I have heard = nothing ? ? ? ? when Richard retired and left the market he also sold his house and vaguely informed me that he was going to live in his holiday home that he would only ever refer to as being "somewhere in Norfolk ? ? he gave no one his address, he did mention that he had a mobile phone but refused to give anyone (including me) his number making it quiet impossible for me to contact him so all I could do was provide him with my phone number in the hope that he would contact me with news of his progress, unfortunately to this day (for whatever reason ? ?) I have heard nothing from him leaving me to conclude a choice of possible reasons for this situation, that being, = either something went wrong with his plans ? = he subsequently suffered some kind of illness ? = or from my personal perspective, the particularly unpalatable conclusion that my friendship was obviously valued far less than I had previously thought it was ? ? ?
