I first met Chsrles Keeping's work in a long forgotten children's book. However, I have collected the Folio Society books illustrated by him, especially the Dickens volumes. The combination of my favourite author and illustrator is wonderful. I'm always looking out for Charle's works.

I am a Devonian, but in the 70s and 80s I lived fid some time in Becmenham, if only I'd know about the Keeping Gallery then. I loved this post, so thank you.

I recently visited the Keeping Gallery, having meant to do so since reading this piece a while ago. I must say to anyone reading, please try to visit, you will be handsomely rewarded! Vicky Keeping gave me a wonderfully interesting insight into their world and the work of her Mum and Dad. Both the gallery and Vicky are fascinating. I have been aware of Charles' work since a child, as many a school book was graced with his lovely, strange and thought provoking illustrations. Many gave me a real chill but all were absolutely right for the book and often improved the reading experience. I found a copy of the Highwayman a year or so ago and that reminded me of the feelings I had as a child. I've since bought a copy of Warrior Scarlet, by Rosemary Sutcliff, one of my absolute favourites, and remembered how perfect one book can be when you dearly love the writing and illustration. So, thank you GA for making me aware of the gallery and to everyone else, please try to visit!

Sitting here at my parents' home in Brooklyn, New York, on a rainy September 1st day, I am unexpectedly visited by Charles Keeping, his family and admirers. As a new teacher, American, in London, early 1970's, Shaun and the Horse Cart, and Rag and bones, through Charles Keeping, captured my mind, added to my world view.
History is a strong part of my everyday, now, as in addition to teaching, I am caring for my 98 year old father, who springs from the Lower East Side, New York equivalent to the east end, perhaps, of London. He and Charles would surely be spending hours and hours burrowing through their memories.

Thank you, thank you, I am deeply in debt to you, Gentle Author,
for honoring one of my favorites.

Sincerely,
Miriam Pope

Charles up in heaven now here this. You are a massive talent you must be good your family and friends have put blue plaque at No 16. I expect you are still painting surrounded by past painters who have moved on like you. Back on mother earth; I liked his pony and trap paintings lots of movement here. He loved horses and people he could construct both beautifully. His brick work and cobbles are superb. Lets keep his art on the move I would like for a young artist to come forward and paint a collection in Mr Zing Man's memory, of course with the young persons stamp on them. Showing them would perpetuate his memory in a nice London Gallery and give a young talent a start-up. How about that. PS Charles up there, I have done my best for you its up to your public now, they still remember and love you. John B
