I live in Swindon, an area once famous for its cheeses. The saying ‘different as chalk and cheese’ originates from Wiltshire with its chalk downlands in the south of the county and its dairy farming in the north. Another fascinating pen portrait. Thank you.

I was told my grandfather when younger used to make his own “cottage cheese ” at home in Purdy Street, Bromley by Bow, tying muslim around a dripping tap. Unfortunately he died in Dagenham when I was only a year old, and before I had tasted any. So I would really like to taste some of this one.

Have you tried Jensen’s Bermondsey Gin?
My friend Christian makes it, in a copper-topped still, underneath a railway arch a little further towards London Bridge than the cheesemakers.
– although I’m not sure if it’s the perfect accompaniment to cheese.

I am with John B. I want some of this cheese. We should form a small but sedate alliance. In a world that moves with ridiculous speed from one fad to another, trending now an actual verb, how I enjoyed this tale of measured skill. The story of London is peppered with small tradesmen and craftspeople and I am delighted that the tale winds on. Also: has anybody else noticed how he looks like Hogarth?

I have reported on these pages about the arches used as air raid shelters. Never for cheese making this is a well presented super blog. I just want to buy some of this, as it must be a super cheese. Perhaps this a niche market with a premium I am sure other bloggers feel the same as me ‘we want some’ of course it will have to be by post. Retailers who will provide a postal service come forward please. John B
