For many years I have gone to Saint Paul's and wondered why the old Church wasn't rebuilt or why nothing was ever seen that remained of the old church, now after years of wondering I now know there are remains of Old Saint Paul's.
I now have to wonder another mystery, are there any subterranean remains, foundation of the medieval walls of the old Church? I suspect with ground penetrating radar or excavations New discoveries may shed light of more remains than we can know.

Fascinating. Like others I have never thought of finding any vestige of the old St Paul's - a huge cathedral which seemed to have totally vanished. The spire was higher than Salisbury's but not as high as Lincoln's which at one time was the highest building in the world. And from the plan it can be seen that there was a huge amount of stone used in building it. A significant proportion of the mass of the new cathedral must comprise stone from the old building albeit, as you say, in the form of crushed filler in the walls .

This is very interesting indeed. I didn't know there were any remains of old Saint Paul's like this and the Anglo-Saxon tomb cover is most interesting. St Paul's was the church used for some of the burials of the Anglo-Saxon kings of Essex (Essex included Middlesex and Hertfordshire in those days). One of the kings was King Sæbi of Essex (664-683) whose tomb was visible until the Great Fire and an engraving of it still survives somewhere. I have often wondered what happened to the bodies in the crypt and whether they were simply left there and the ruined building filled in or whether they were removed and reburied elsewhere. I like to think the bodies in the stone tombs might have survived the fire.
