Fascinating! I've always wondered how these performers cover themselves so well with the paint, etc. When they DO move no skin peeks out, the folds of the fabric aren't different colour, etc.
I know you can't reveal the 'magic' but wow, am I curious! Must be difficult to paint oneself that well! And not be able to wash the clothing? And how do they sit down if the clothing is hard? And, and, and.....

I have seen Matt Walters many times as I pass through Spitalfields market and even though I must have seen him probably hundreds of times each time I pass I aways have to stop for a few minutes to amuse at his presence, I greatly admire his dedication to his craft, it must take incredible discipline, having seen him "in action" many times I can testify that he really is a single handed atraction to the market in his own right, unlike the police officer who was quoated as saying "technically him touching people is assault" = and they really wonder why ? ?

This is a fascinating insight in to little known acting way of life. It is well penned and I hope this account will be passed on with our blogs to Matt the statue-man. He is highly skilled with a stage presence, he must have lots of self discipline. With his many standups he does at Spitalfields Market and elsewhere he has controlled areas of his physique to cope with long period's of standing to attention, the market staff 'look out' for him that's nice. Matt I hope you give many more performances and all your audience's put plenty of cash in your collection bucket placed at your feet your worth it. Just keep going please. John

I first saw human statues in Las Ramblas, Barcelona 9 years ago. Like many, I didn't know if this one was real, but of course, when it moved if frightened the life out of me!

However, I've been fascinated by them ever since.

I think the most convincing ones are those who are stand alone and only them, not a street full of statues.

I shall probably forget about the human statue, the next time I'm in Spitalfields market and be totally freaked out by Matt Walters!
