The heart is being ripped out of a community when thriving pubs like this go. Unfortunately it's been a long term trend in the East End. All four pubs run by my grandfather and his brother were closed some time ago - the last was the Bishop Bonner. At some point there will be a tipping point where the community is fundamentally destroyed. I think we're almost there. Answer - keep fighting it!

Tragic, all these old pubs 'dying'.... East London just isn't right without them somehow.

A while back I randomly had a drink in the "Old Rose" ..The last of the proper old Victorian pubs down the infamous "Ratcliffe Highway" ( now just 'The Highway' )..the next time I passed, it was all boarded up...
In the 1890s ,virtually every other address down there was a pub or so-called ' beer seller ' including the 'Croooked Billet' which was run by my Great Grandfather who was a German immigrant , as were many in the pub trade at that time .
