During the California gold Rush days in the 1850’s the gritty pubs up and down the Mother Lode offered their favoured beverage to the miners they called Moose Milk! It was simply brandy and milk.

Unfortunately it’s been a long term trend in the East End. All four pubs run by my grandfather and his brother were closed some time ago – the last was the Bishop Bonner. At some point there will be a tipping point where the community is fundamentally destroyed. I think we’re almost there. Answer – keep fighting it!

A while back I randomly had a drink in the “Old Rose” ..The last of the proper old Victorian pubs down the infamous “Ratcliffe Highway” ( now just ‘The Highway’ )..the next time I passed, it was all boarded up…
In the 1890s ,virtually every other address down there was a pub or so-called ‘ beer seller ‘ including the ‘Croooked Billet’ which was run by my Great Grandfather who was a German immigrant , as were many in the pub trade at that time .
