Fantastic collection of pictures,certainly brought back a lot of memories? evry body looked so happy but poor? What a different world we live in now. If any body knows the name of the hop farm in Hinton not to sure but thought it may have been Mc ?????

I always remember the Sally Army coming round the hop fields with their tea urn. I always enjoyed the hop picking days going back to school two weeks after everyone else instead of 6 weeks we always had 8 weeks. My grandfather worked in the boiler house stoking the fires for hot water and the showers, my uncles driving for the hops going to the oast houses we use to drive the lorries and tractors on the field. Good old days to say the least.

One of Jack the Ripper’s victims, Catherine Eddowes, had recently come back from hop picking in Kent (Summer, 1888) before she had her fatal encounter with the Ripper on 30 September 1888.

These photographs are so wonderful. My mum’s family (from Limehouse, Bermondsey and later Islington) always looked forward to their ‘hopping’ holidays. These pictures are beautiful reminders of the stories they told. I think there were high jinks and high spirits!
And Pauline’s comment above about scarfs and pinnies is spot on!

What a wonderful account of an amazing time in my life. I was 11 years old and went hopping down Five Oak Green, for the first and last time. I am 66 now , it was my first holiday and the most favourite of all time, full of freedom and excitement and money earned at 2 bob a bushel, that’s 10p in new money

I had completely forgotten until I saw these photos just how many women in the 1950s wore a scarf tied around their head in this fashion. And that our mothers always wore a ‘pinny’.
