Good riddance to Robin Hood Gardens – poor architecture and bad buildings, derivative and outdated when designed and constructed, the result of inept and patronising social engineering by architects imposing simple-minded notions of what they (in their bourgeois wisdom) felt that working class communities ought to want. Not all change is bad.

Thanks for putting all of these sites together. So many places are now under threat from greedy developers. This is a scandal when we have so much homelessness and overcrowding.

Piloti’s ‘Nooks and Corners’ section in the current Private Eye (No. 1398), records that no fewer than four members of Historic England (formerly English Heritage) “attended the Tower Hamlets planning meeting on Norton Folgate in support of British Land”. Given that their stated position is “not to endorse the plans in any way” Piloti asks “Why?” Indeed.

A fantastic blog entry. The map, the text and the links provide a wealth of information. This is a great resource revealing the impact of unrestrained Capitalism. A few weeks ago, on a visit to London, I got chatting to a curator at a well known East End gallery and a lecturer in architecture who described London as a city ‘eating itself.’ What has happened to our sense of social and cultural responsibility? Thank goodness for the people and groups willing- or, sadly, forced – to stand up to this.

Excellent initialtive and very timely. We need to
change the whole planning system which gives councillors a couple of hours to decide on a scheme that will effect a whole area and community – often for the worse – for generation.
