Fell into The Liberty and then fell in love with it. This was a great article and really helped me get a feel for the place, haven’t been back in a while. As a Scotsman London has never felt like home but when I was on Folgate Street itself taking pictures for a graphic novel I could actually see myself living there (like a comic book writer could ever afford it 🙂 )

I lived at 20 Elder Street (that number does not now exist) from 1953-1959 with my sister and mother. We moved because the landlord threatened to triple the rent. #20 consisted of 3 separate flats. We lived in one and the other 2 my mother rented out to help pay her rent. I have visited Elder Street twice since emigrating to the US in 1964. I was very impressed with the area which is now inhabited with mainly people who work in the City. It was a slum when we lived there with most of the buildings not having bathrooms. It sure has changed. There used to be a large police station toward the end of the street which has long gone. I am very happy the street was not totally knocked down.

Absolutely looking forward to this evening. We have to stop the rapacious destruction of what is an historically important area. Greedy developers should not be allowed to destroy Norton Folgate for their benefit. No-one should be allowed to destroy this area.

“SAVE NORTON FOLGATE” – This is our PAST & our FUTURE!
London is losing its face & structure to quick fix schemes that will not last.
What then, pull that building down too. London is known for its great wealth
of History & we should preserve as well as modernise our great City otherwise
it will be a huge ugly office block with no meaning & no visitors. We are proud of our Heritage
lets us do all we can to “preserve”. Do not become like Amerca who now that they have
destroyed the little history that they once had, regret that all they have now is modern & have
to travel far & wide to see to see historic Culture (LONDON) & all they will see is modern.
London is a wealth of our past & without it we have NOTHING, it is our FUTURE we are destroying.

Thank you Dan Cruickshank & Sian Philips for speaking up for our past & our future.
This is important issue. Good to see so many people stand up for “our” London.

When will all of this mindless demolition of Londons past stop.Londons streets are changing on a weekly basis and sadly not for the better.As the wonderful Dan Cruikshank said, ” greed greed greedy!”

I hope so much that you will be successful in your bid to defeat British Land and its sick and sad attempt to, as you say, make itself rich at the expense of other people’s happiness. Their behaviour is despicable, corporate greed at its very worst.

In his video Dan Cruickshank talks about the industrial buildings of Norton Folgate as being “a buffer” between the residential and the modern commercial. These are beautiful old buildings and have every right to survive, but that they also act as a buffer is a very important point. More office buildings create a need for more bars, restaurants, and coffee shops. This brings more human traffic to your street, more noise, more litter, and more petty vandalism . My other point is that when you have twenty, thirty store building looming down on top of you, it destroys the whole scale of the existing older buildings and streets and everything takes on a theme – park feel. Everything looks fake. The South Street Seaport in New York is a case in point, although one is thankful it wasn’t destroyed. I live at Astor place where we have the wonderful Cooper Union building and around the corner the Public Theater, two fine Victorian institutions. They are now surrounded and dominated by three rather ugly modern buildings. These older buildings used to be the focal point here, now they look lost, like two pensioners on a day trip. Save Norton Folgate.

I wish your campaign every success – people travel to London for its history; there are plenty of modern skyscraper developments for them to enjoy in eg. Canary Wharf, and the only good thing about British Land is its very misleading name.
