Thank you THCH for sharing this special time in history! It was a time when community and commerce came together to produce a resource we are sorely in need of. As I was searching my own family history for my personal hop-picking memories your project reached me! My brief connections were with the Adcock/Halliday family. I hope it's OK to add my small contribution here: https://wartsandall.blog/2019/05/22/hop-pickers/ Well done everyone!

Love looking at all these photos and am always looking for photos of relatives on here. My Grandad tells happy tales of going hop picking every Summer, but we don't have very many photos of our family whilst they were in Kent. I know they were in the Horsmonden area. If anyone has any photos that include any of the Anson family, especially my Great-Grandma, Mary Anson - known as Aunt Mary to many, I believe (and quite a character by all accounts!) - then I'd love to hear from you...or if anyone has any stories....
Thanks in anticipation!

As a family, we moved to West Malling in 1972. We'd travelled the world and now we were in the Garden of England. I remember my Mum saying 'they all come down from the East End to pick the hops' - but I thought it was something they did much earlier.

What a great post - so lovely to hear the stories of cameraderie, rabbits and getting a legal high!

I grew up in Kent and remember the huts at Paddock Wood and the drey horses coming down from London for their summer holiday, too. My Grandma had a sweet shop and used to peddle sweets to the pickers in the hopfields just outside Sittingbourne. The smell of hops is so evocative of Kentish late summers! Lovely photos and memories...thank you, GA.

I think that the East End must have been deserted at hop picking time! Lovely nostalgic writing and how wonderful all these people look, hop picking from such an early age for some of them certainly doesn't seem to have done them any harm, quite the reverse. Thank you for another really interesting piece.
