My grandfather came from the East End. Henry Richard Goozee. My father never had a photo of him or new where he was buried until he was an old man. I have just visited douchy-les-ayette british cemetery in France on the 100 year centenary of his death. I spend hours on the computer looking at all the photographic images desperately trying to find that one elusive photo.
His details are Royal Field Artillery, Gunner, 38146, 45th Bty, 42nd Bde. If anyone has any further information I would be so grateful.

My grandfather, William Boulton, served in the First World War as a gunner with the 6th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He was wounded in action at Passchendaele in August 1917, and subsequently discharged from the army as unfit for further service in December 1917. Born in Stepney, he died at home, 111 Belgrave Street, in February 1919 at the age of 30. Sadly, although acknowledged as a casualty of the war, and my grandmother granted a widows' pension, to my knowledge my grandfather's name is not commemorated on any war memorial.

These men were far from home and did not know if they would live or die.
Some of the black soldiers in London during WWI fathered children by the British women.
My father had a child with one of these mixed children. She used to go up to Staffordshire with her white sister to visit the camp during WWII.
I had searched for her to no avail.
I wonder how many mixed race children were born during WWI by these black soldiers.
