Can anyone verify that the postcard photo of Old Ford Road just off Ducketts Bridge is correct? I accept that the road layout seems accureate, but I lived in Roman Road soon after WWII and I remember none of the shops or houses shown here, nor the pub on the left. I have tried to trace the name of the pub on the left but without success.

Thank you for this information. My maternal grandmother Rose Doughty was a working class woman, mother of nine children she was from Alma Street, Hoxton. I understand she took part in the suffrage movement with her children always glad of the tea after any protest walk. sadly she died before I was born would love to find out more about what she did.

I would love to hear more from Lizzie Lloyd. Her cousin Jessie Payne was crucial to Sylvia P's recovery and her story should be included in the current exhibition at Bancroft Rd Library. I urge her to get in touch with me, you, the librarian or the exhibition organisers!

Wonderful to read all this about the WLFS. My first cousin (thrice removed) was Jessie Payne, of whom my family is very proud. Sylvia Pankhurst lived with her and her husband (my mum's 'uncle Jim') at 28 Old Ford Road. We have photos and stories handed down by my grandmother and mother about Jessie's suffragette activities and her visits to Leicester (my great-grandfather, her uncle, but so close in age they were brought up as brother and sister had moved to Leicester) where she would complain about the cobbled streets hurting her bunions!!

I was so glad to have come across this site. My 2x Great Aunt, Mrs. Jane Savoy (pseudonym Mrs. Hughes, as her husband didn't want his name in the papers) was a suffragette and one of the six women elected by the ELFS to form the deputation to PM Asquith in June 1914. As depicted in the YouTube video 'Shoulder to Shoulder', she was the brush maker who spoke first to Asquith. She lived in St. Stephen's Road and was a close friend and neighbour to both George Lansbury and Sylvia Pankhurst. My Great Grandmother lived a door away to Sylvia's three storey suffragette house in Old Ford Road and my whole family in Bow attended the many suffragette rallies. We have so much to thank these women for and I am so proud of my family's involvement in the fight for women's rights.

This really brings it home to me; all the times I have skipped placing a vote (for a myriad of reasons) when all these women made it possible to even have that CHOICE! Thanks for sharing this important history.
