My grandfather and great-grandfather put themselves down on census as “drovers”, and I guess that is where they would have driven animals through to the Smithfield

My grandmother was born in Hackney in 1873 so I bet she knew this tower, and my grandfather lived in Spring Lane as a young man so he probably knew it too.
