My parents were unwilling for me to stay on after ‘O’ levels, but I remember an interview that we had with Mrs. Dunford, in which she told them that the country ‘needed my brain’ and that it would be a waste of my intelligence and talent if I didn’t go on to university! I subsequently studied Latin and English at Swansea, where I met my beloved husband; we’ve been together since 1962 and have two wonderful sons and two delightful granddaughters.
