So good to hear Monty’s story. I have just found his signed book in my mother’s and father’s bookcase.
Sadly my father Ted Gilbey (Goldberg) died in 2006, but he was also a member of The Cambridge and Bethnal Green Boy’s Club and spoke of it with great enthusiasm.

Just realised you worked for Topical Press at at one time.
So did I, after starting as a runner boy for Associated Press I moved on to Topical Press circa 1935. It’s a small world aint it 🙂

I had the honour to get to know Monty at the early morning swims in Southgate. He deserves all the tributes that come his way. He continues to fight for what is right. More power to his elbow for many, many more years to come!

We moved to Spain but occasionally keep in touch by Email. I do miss those early morning swims and the chats in the queue before hand!

Yes ‘tea leafing’. I’m sure there’s many a story that could be told about that part of our youth. It was, I suppose, one of the darker sides of growing-up in our formative years. However, we survived and, for the most part, thrived, and from, what could be considered to-day , a disadvantaged beginning, to a life well lived. Great story.

It’s THIS special generation, like my father is too — he is 87 years old and up early in the mornings to do what is to be done. And he wants to become 100 years! (He will achieve this!)

I would have liked to see the Monty smile again and I would like to see Monty awarded an honour in the Queen’s Birthday list, for all the work he has selflessly given. Amazing. Oh, and I’d like to see a bouquet for Betty … you know what they say about successful men! 🙂
