Does anyone remember their parents talking about Bonner the undertaker who had his premises off Arbour square? My dad and his brother and three sisters lived off the square.

During the war my dad remembers being asleep upstairs and waking to find he was luckily alive but trapped because the roof had come down through part of the ceiling due to bombs dropping and destroying houses in the row where he lived.

Sorry to add to my previous comment, the greengrocers was Montys.
Martin Chappel owned the Tower diy next to head st where G.S.Fish used to do business.
Martin had a nickname GB, have to let you guess there, his brother Dave was a great likeable character, good days, great memories .
There was a beautiful woman Esther lived in Senrab st, she looked good even when the weather was grey, and is forever a worthy decent person to cherish, God bless her.

I’m online now trying to find the same thing after walking past today and taking a photo of the old sign.
That’s mad, that sign is very old, do we know how old?
You might wanna save that sign somehow.

To the poster who mentioned Old Church Road - it's a short walk away and I went to nursery there. The Barnados was originally on what is Ben Jonson Road.

There was also a police station in Arbour Square, and the police houses were a little way across the road heading towards Stepney Way and Stepney Green.

Stepney and Spitalfields are two different places.

Senrab Street is marked and named on Charles Booth’s wonderful 1889 map of London poverty, so was not renamed after the war. I think “Barnes backwards” is a coincidence as they were unlikely to joke with street names in those days but there is no proof either way. The 1889 map is wonderful. I have found EVERY street my forbears lived on, nearly all now disappeared or renamed, eg Fair Street which was parallel to Senrab Street and half of which remains as Dunelm Street.

Hi
I was just researching my family tree, my great grandfather Henry William House lived in 4 Senrab St, along with his wife Emily and their young son William Edwin House. Sadly he was killed in action 1917 in France. It was lovely to see where his young family started.
Thank you
