It is a small public place with many small allotments and beautiful walkways lined with many exotic plants, shrubs and trees.
A really secluded peaceful place well worth a visit. A gem hidden amongst the city scape.

The Bodleian has an edition of ‘The English Physician Enlarged’ from 1770 (digitized by Google), by ‘Nich. Culpepper, Gent., Student in Physick and Astrology’. By 1790 it has become ‘Culpeper’s English Physician and Complete Herbal’ with one Ebenezer Sibly adding a dedication to a Masonic patron, Thomas Dunkerly, Esq. By 1850, it is ‘The Complete Herbal…applied to The Cure of All Disorders Incident to Mankind’ and Nicolas had become Nicolas Culpeper, M.D. The 1850 edition has a fine engraving of Culpeper and Red Lion House, Spitalfield, the latter surrounded by the open fields noted in the post.

It is interesting that Nicholas Culpeper and the first female physician, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, were both members of the Society of Apothecaries which successfully challenged the Royal College of Physicians members’ monopoly of practising medicine.
