Although my mother was born under ‘bow bells’ in Lambeth, I never knew about her heritage until recently. (I’ve discovered our family lived in Spitalfields since at least the 1550s. In fact it was a Burman, my mother’s maiden name, who I believe was one of the first to try developing the area. I only ever heard her talk ‘cockney’ once, properly, although she had the south London accent. I was raised in North West London, so of course I had heard of the Pearly Kings and Queens, but I never knew they raised money for charity, and they look so smashing too… I now live across the world, but I have been inspired by these wonderful people and their pearly buttons. I will start sewing straight away, and bring a bit of my mum’s London to Australia. Cheers, and good luck in your new career Bob.

So pleased to see Bob carry on this this very old tradition, he was a valued member of the Jewel house staff and we will miss him, his wealth of knowledge is incredable , his work for St Josephs Hospice is incredable and should receive a medal for his work .

oh I feel all emotional , I love the pearlies , such a wonderful visual and feel good feast for the eyes and soul. I remember meeting them as a child on Clapham Common at steam fairs when my great uncle was demonstrating his models.
Like magical creatures straight out of Mary Poppins they appear , and the wonderful thing is ….they ARE real.
I wish Bob , all the best , what an honour to be brought into the pearlies by his fairy godparents Larry and Doreen, who saw his potential. Love Doreens bag and all their rig outs .
