In the South Region of the USA, old wooden homes are being destroyed by arsonists and those who hate the Area’s past. Everything is connected to a view that those “_____” built the home, lived in it were racists??? One Family in MS removed a very old wooden farm house, which was downtown, very small, next to the Mortician’s Building, to save the family history. Others look on with dismay, we are leaving this area. too many arsonists, murders, assaults, and contempt for others. The American South is so misunderstood thanks to the USA Media Burn.

Oh dear. The Middlesex is gone and I didn’t know. I was there during the Blitz, my mother having a hurried trip just before I arrived into the world The Annie Zuntz ward is no more and with it the chance of a Blue Plaque.
Bravo domestic vandals, you managed where the Luftwaffe failed.

My maternal grandfather was born in Bethnal Green workhouse, but father never mentioned in either the Creed Register or the birth certificate, unfortunately. Would dearly love to know who it was “droite de seigneur” was mentioned by an uncle who had access to family letters and papers – since lost(!)

Great article. Thank goodness there are people prepared to stand up, work hard and fight for our historical buildings. The short-sightedness and wanton destruction of so many vernacular buildings in the last couple of decades has been horrifying.

One wonders what will become of the Queen Elizabeth II hospital on Hackney Rd. The proposals are quite disgusting. We can only hope Boris sees some sense and reverses the decision. It seems to me that with the demographic in the area, a very smart architect could convert the guts of the building to an outstanding new-media-workspace-hire venue, keeping the outside largely as is.

I worked in this area for several years & am very fond of it. I was aware of Cleveland Street’s reputation (‘The Wickedest Street in London’), but that it had such a history! It’s one of the few areas in central London where ordinary people still live, & the sense of community is palpable. I recall that in one job, I regularly used the cash machines in the Middlesex, as they were nearer than any bank.
The sheer wanton rape of this site is shocking – and, more worrying, is the length of time there’s no activity – just an ugly space, waiting for Money to be made… The rumour was that the Middlesex buildings would be converted to apartments – obviously a lie. Is it not possible for a ‘certificate of immunity’ to be rescinded? Who was the fool of a minister? If I can assist in any way, please let me know.

Great article, and it saddens me to think how much of London and its history is being destroyed by those whose greed has taken over their lives and limited their abilty to see anything but the means to make money.
