In 1934 my family moved into a top floor flat in Brune House, Brune St. a stone’s throw from where the author’s mother now lives. During, or perhaps just after WWII, my dad got an orange box, filled it with soil, put it on the parapet outside of my parent’s bed room window & made it into his very own garden.
He usually grew tomatoes and they did pretty well due to the plentiful sun (well sort of) and the large doses of horse manure that he picked up off the street. Back then, the milkmen used a horse-drawn, rubber tired cart. And all of the brewer’s drays were horse drawn too.

That’s a lovely portrait of your mother Delwar, both the photographs and the story, which has the more poignancy because she was herself transplanted from rural Bangladesh to a treeless and stony London; and there is something captivating in keeping alive this countryside memory in an alien urban environment.
