I worked for a Japanese bank who moved from opposite Leadenhall Market at Gracechurch St to a building right by The Monument in 1985 (I believe it may now be flats?) We remained in Monument St until the company moved to St Martins Le Grand in 1991 and I am ashamed to say I never had the nerve to make the climb. Something about small enclosed staircases and heights I think, as I've never made it all the way to the top of the Scott Monument in Edinburgh and find the stairs to the Wallace Monument in Stirling scary, but worth it for the exhilarating view from the top.

I moved back to Scotland in 2004, but will definitely be including this on my "to do" list next time I'm in London. However, I'm not as fit in my 50s as I was in my 20s, so it will be a challenge!

The old Billingsgate fish market was all around the Monument back in the day, my dad was a postman and that was his 'walk', meaning he delivered the post all around there. One day he was behind a porter who was carrying a wooden crate of live eels on his head (they did wear special hats), and they found a way out of the box and one by one slithered out and straight down the drains. He had lost quite a few before he realised.

IIRC the inscription(s) at the base had to be altered, since the original hinted (if not stated directly) that the Great Fire was started by "the Catholics".
These were removed at a later date (!)

A fascinating post. My 8 year old nephew is captivated by the Fire of London. We had a great trip up The Monument. Will your book be ready in time for me to give him a copy for his 9th birthday on Sept 3rd?
