A very late reply to Graham Bould's question about the raising of the height of the land in Saint Anne's in Soho. It's true, but rather ghoulish: bodies of the dead. So many people died in the plague that the bodies filled the grounds to overflowing, and bodies were buried in mass pits, piled high - so to this day the ground level is much higher than it should be. No digging in the Churchyard grounds therefore, as the Black Plague bacteria can live a long time... Its probably one of the key reasons that St Anne's has never been developed.

As usual, this is a fascinating entry, but I'm puzzled about the statement concerning the raising by two metres in 1740 of the ground level in Soho. What would have been the reason(ing) behind that? It's a lot of infill to find!
