I am following up from Alex Freed's comment from 2022. I was a good friend to Rodney Freed who regretably passed way from Covid in 2022. He was a loyal, funny, charming and generous soul. He was living with his daughter Alex in Kensal Rise when I last saw him 2018.He is deeply missed .

When I was 17 I worked for a year at the shop in St Martins Lane in the office. I had a fabulous working relationship with both Mr and Mrs Freed as well as Ellen who was the shop manageress at the time. I remember fondly how Mr Freed was always asking me to help him write his memoirs.
I am now 61 and last year my sister and I took a walk down memory lane and went in to the shop. I was pleasantly surprised how it had stayed virtually the same and it was lovely to be inside the shop and relive those lovely memories of my time working there.

I love stories about people working in trades that are vital yet probably get overlooked most of the time. I've always loved shoes ... of any type, any origin, any special application. The world would stop without them and the people who produce them. An old pair of wooden clogs and a pair of old leather Afghani shoes, virtually of the same shape, are on the floor under my hall table. They would never get the chuck and are as treasured as the antique table they are placed under. What a fascinating article and what wonderful and dedicated craftsmen.

To those of you looking for Mr Rodney Freed, I had the pleasure of meeting him today in the Duke of Kendall pub in Paddington where he goes every to watch the foot all (his beloved Chelsea). He kept me entertained all afternoon with his stories of making ballet shoes and shoes for different famous people. A delight and a joy to talk to. He lives with his daughter who owns Nikkys restaurant in Kilburn he tells me. Hopefully you can contact him through one of these avenues. What a wonderful man.
