I can remember our family wharf Shaw Lovell's right in the bend of the river, my father used to worry about the stevedores who would queue up for work every morning, those that were needed were taken on for the work those not just had to go home empty handed, it worried him and he'd buy loaves of bread to give to as many men as possible, he had just heard of the idea of containers before he died, thought it would be an excellent ideas as so much was stolen from the cargo. I used as to go to Canary Wharf with him and well recall all the boats tied up and how busy it all was such fun to watch as a child.
Father also always kept an area for painters on the wall of the wharf as painters loved it as they could see up and down the river at the same time, there were always people there, though it was difficult to get paper and paints in the war.
