Oh so lovely to see pics of the shop and Omar and to remember this soul-nourishing institution! I’d forgotten until reading this piece and the comments about the kebab rolls! Also the little dishes of raw onion and red sauce. The slightly sticky tables and delicious orange laddoos – or am I imagining the laddoos?

I’d usually get chicken biriani and as a young woman making a special trip from N London for some home comfort, this was one of the few places in London in the 1990s I’d feel comfortable in by myself. Omar was lovely – I wonder what’s happened to him. Omar if you’re reading this…?!

Such fond memories from so long ago – my wife and I fondly remember late Sunday breakfast at Sweet and Spicy – after a good old rummage in Brick lane market -so many memories of taking friends and family there over the years – we still remember and can taste every dish we had – the chicken and the lamb curry – dahl – potato cakes – fabulous rice – stacks of steaming chapatis – mmm well everything really – yes …every dish !!- and every mammoth takeaway we took back home – Thank you so much for your wonderful food and your fabulous friendly place to eat when we lived in London –

My Bengali work friend introduced me to the cafe in the late 90s and I loved it so much! Always had chicken biryani but for the first time in maybe over ten years your article has reminded me of those wonderful kebab rolls and the texture and taste of them suddenly came back to me: I’m almost salivating with hunger and desire for one now!!

Went today in the hope of a kebab roll with red sauce and was gutted that it wasn’t there any more. Asked around but no luck. What was that delicious red sauce?! Remember the wrestling artwork clearly. Sad times! But thank you for all those delicious spicy rolls.

When I was a young boy I would travel with my father from Hastings for an asian grocery shop at brick lane for our household. We would sit and have lunch at this wonderfull place on many occasions and I could not get enough of the food. I was devastated to find that it had been closed down when I took my wife and two boys for the experience ?. Thank you Mr Butt for all your hard work.

Butt sahib the owner was a legend. From 1974 to 1976 my late mother worked there as the cook and Nan/tandoor roti maker.
The pictures of the wresters were amazing. Gama pehlwaan being the most prominent.
There was juke box which played anything from Muhammad Rafi to Elvis. There were pictures of horses on the windows. Butt sahib was a big fan of equastrian sports.
