Next day as usual I went to buy my usual paper and Harry wouldn’t take any money, in fact he didn’t take any cash from me for the 6 months I carried on working at Truman’s. A lovely photo of him outside the shop came up on twitter last week which prompted me to do a search.
I kind gentle soul and one of the last of a generation RIP H

Dad was the oldest of the five Fishmans. I am his youngest, so I was about 10/11 when we used to visit. Uncle Harry would fill our pockets with chocolates until we were bursting. He turned a blind eye to local kids stealing from him of course.
Dad thought the world of him, the kindest of all men. I wish I could have known him better.

I was unaware of his death back then but it is only fitting that so many people turned out for his funeral.
It is often said that “they don’t make them like that anymore” but in Harry’s case it really is true. A truly altruistic shopkeeper, the likes of which I have never met since. RIP Harry – on behalf of all us Great Eastern Buildings people: “thank you.”

Rest in peace great man.
