I fondly remember Harry in that corner shop, 1982 I finished work in the Brewery and stumbled upon a nutcase trying to rob Harry.. being young and daft I grabbed the fellow who was then subsequently arrested by a copper on the beat. Next day as usual I went to buy my usual paper and Harry wouldn’t take any money, in fact he didn’t take any cash from me for the 6 months I carried on working at Truman’s. A lovely photo of him outside the shop came up on twitter last week which prompted me to do a search.
I kind gentle soul and one of the last of a generation RIP H

it breaks my heart to see him, ill and suffering from awful chilblains from years of cold.
Dad was the oldest of the five Fishmans. I am his youngest, so I was about 10/11 when we used to visit. Uncle Harry would fill our pockets with chocolates until we were bursting. He turned a blind eye to local kids stealing from him of course.
Dad thought the world of him, the kindest of all men. I wish I could have known him better.

Harry was indeed a legend. I was unaware of his death back then but it is only fitting that so many people turned out for his funeral.
It is often said that "they don't make them like that anymore" but in Harry's case it really is true. A truly altruistic shopkeeper, the likes of which I have never met since. RIP Harry - on behalf of all us Great Eastern Buildings people: "thank you."

I Knew Harry for 12 years he was a legend, One of the most kind hearted human beings you could meet, As a worker at Trumans next door I well know the generosity he showed to the workers at the Brewery, I could write a Book about the great man, He died of cancer in his eighties and was laid to rest in Rainham Jewish cemetery where hundreds of mourners were there.

Rest in peace great man.
