In my years of visiting this blog I've expected that one day I would happen across a photo of a family member or friend - my grandad trading on Club Row for example. What I never expected was that one of my teenage sons would look over my shoulder at breakfast and say 'Look that's Otis's dad'. Just lovely.

Thanks and best wishes,

I so enjoyed reading this, thank you.
The hospice sounds great, the choir superb.
And I love your writing, especially "exudes buried suffering". Very elegant.

St Joseph’s has had a profoundly beautiful effect on the East End of London, reaching down every street, turning round every corner, making a deep difference to lives when people most need help.

St. Joseph’s, with their endlessly practical support, enabled my husband Tony to die at home, to die beside me in our own bed, with our dogs around us. The nurses who helped make that possible understood Tony’s anarchic sense of humour, and they totally respected his committed atheism..

Before Tony became ill I had thought St. Joseph’s the sort of religious institution that would try to impose their beliefs on the dying. Nothing could be further from the truth.

The gratitude that I, and many thousands of others, feel for the services of St Joseph’s resonates through the world that is ‘Spitalfields Life’.

(And the jumble sales are terrific fun as well!)

Well done Rosie Dastgir and all the photographers who have accompanied her excellent writing this week.
