merry christmas from all the generations behind you (and charles dickens, too, who tells us in a christmas carol he is standing at our elbow), with thanks to bill for giving you a richly deserved pressie.

Welcome, Yule!

So the shortest day came, and the year died,
And everywhere down the centuries of the snow-white world
Came people singing, dancing,
To drive the dark away.
They lighted candles in the winter trees;
They hung their homes with evergreen;
They burned beseeching fires all night long
To keep the year alive,
And when the new year's sunshine blazed awake
They shouted, reveling.
Through all the frosty ages you can hear them
Echoing behind us — Listen!!
All the long echoes sing the same delight,
This shortest day,
As promise wakens in the sleeping land:
They carol, fest, give thanks,
And dearly love their friends,
And hope for peace.
And so do we, here, now,
This year and every year.
Welcome Yule!

Oh, how fabulous. What a beautiful thing. You are fortunate indeed, although of course you have made your own fortune in this case, I think, with your hard work and fascination for where you live. Marvellous. Happy New Year!

Thank you so much for the beautiful pictures of both axe and puss. A story of self-effacement on both sides and a lovely outcome. My associations with the East End are in the distant past of family history but I very much enjoy the tales, pictures and campaigning updates which indicate strong community.
