Although it is attached to a 19th century house, it one of the oldest buildings in Islington. It was built in the early 16th century as one of two pavillions in the wall surrounding the garden of Canonbury House. The stone carving underneath the window in the picture is the rebus of William Bolton, penultimate Prior of St Bartholomew’s Priory in Smithfield, for whom Canonbury House was the country retreat. 

I am one of the team of guides from Islington Guided Walks that lead twice monthly tours of the Canonbury Tower, the only significant surviving part of Canonbury House (although built after Prior Bolton’s time). You can see this building and the Bolton rebus after the main tour.
