Saint Clement Danes stands a short distance to the east, behind Saint Mary -le-Strand. Designed by James Gibbs, construction commenced 1714. The church is almost opposite Strand entrance to Somerset House and until recently stood on its own island. Narrowly escaped destruction following major redevelopment during the early part of the 20th century, in order to create Kingsway and Aldwych, although the churchyard was destroyed and remains from graves moved to Brookwood Cemetery, in Surrey.
