I visited this magnificent building during Open House and thoroughly recommend anyone to visit if they can. One of the guides was a young man who had recently been successful in his application to join the Drapers and explained the process. There are three ways to join-if you can prove your forebears were members, you are automatically entitled. If you have appropriate trade links, you may also get a place, or you can apply if you have an interest in its charitable work and be offered an interview. The Guild has a long history of supporting retired and disabled workers from the trade, but these days most of its activity is directed to charitable work, especially providing access to music for those who may not otherwise have much opportunity to enjoy it. From memory, they spend about £3m a year on instruments, school suppport with musical instruments, scholarships for musically gifted etc. Members have the benefit of an annual dinner in the hall and networking

An amazing place, like a palace. Magnificant. And a very well written piece. The colour photos show how grand it really is, which you don't get from the old old black & white photos. Such a contrast! It makes me wonder how a Guild of Drapers would want to lavish such expence on a meeting place! - as you say, as grand as any palace in Europe! They must have had a few bob! Many thanks for sharing with us.
