Hi Dianne,
Nice to see your post.

Morrie Mack (Mekelburg) was my father's (Joe) uncle and my great uncle. I have some memories of him , he died in 1956 , I was 9.

I joined M,Mack straight from school in 1963 and must have missed knowing your father by a few years. Amazing to know that he drove a lorry at Morrie's funeral.

His colleague drivers at that time might have been Sid Tabor and Alfie Shepperd ?
who I knew well.

Not many people around now who have some memories of that time in Spitalfields.

Best wishes to you,

Greg Leigh.

My Dad worked for Morrie Mack back in the 1950s and often spoke about what a nice Gentleman Morrie Mack was. My dad mentioned something on the lines of that he drove a M MACK lorry at Morries funeral. My Dad was Arthur Scott and also worked at Spitalfields Market as a driver for the Whitehouse Brothers. This may not be relevant, sorry if it is not, but my Dad loved working for Morrie and working in the East End.

With Very Best Wishes

Hello Brian and Reina

I have just been speaking on Facebook with Helene Gaither and also with Leslie Merrill, who is another US cousin.

We have not spoken before and I am intrigued with your part of the family too.

What a small world this is turning out to be for the Mekelburg family.

Best wishes

Brian and Reina,

Good to see your post on the "Spitalfields Life" website. I shall draw this to the attention of those UK Mekelburgs where I have their email addresses.

When my son (Philip) got me started in 2011 - it resulted in my trying to find and gather the surviving UK descendants of my mother's family (hence the original Spitalfields Life article back in May 2012 - above here). In doing this I became aware of a Mekelburg family branch in the USA but I'm afraid that I never gave any thought as to how much and how far they would have multiplied.

I think that the original Mekelburgs would be truly astonished if they knew how and where their family had evolved over the last couple of hundred years !

Inside all of this I think that we owe a "thank you" to the Gentle Author at Spitalfields Life who has made so much of this possible.

Best wishes

Greeetings! We are very excited to read these stories. Reina and I are the daughter and son of Abraham Alfred Mekelburg, MD ("Al") (1/26/21-7/18/2013), whose father was Phillip Mekelburg, one of five children (Phillip, Charles, Joseph, Edward, Marcel, & Amelia) of Abraham Mekelburg. Abraham was from the East End of London. His brother was Isaac (who begat the New York Mekelburgs: Joseph, et al). Abraham moved to Chelsea, MA, outside of Boston, with his wife, Rebecca Schaverien (of East End of London) around the turn of the 20th century, and opened a cigar store. Phillip ran a bar and cafe in Chelsea, MA. Our father, Al, moved from Chelsea, to Los Angeles in 1946, with our mother, Frances Stearns of Chelsea, where he began his 50 year practice of Family Medicine.
I live in Los Angeles. Reina lives in Santa Cruz, CA.
Reina has been newly in touch with Helene Gaither, our cousin, granddaughter of our great uncle, Edward ("Eddie"). It is through her that we have come to be in touch. We never new about the extended family in England.
We would love to hear from other relatives. Please respond to Reina's e-mail: reina1023@yahoo.com.

I cannot even believe my luck right now!! I've been tracing my family tree for the last couple months and as I get further and further back in history, things become a little sketchy and hard to trace. Then I stumble upon this article and I'm AMAZED!!!

Jon and Andrea, Isaac Mekelburg was my great grandfather's uncle!! So here's how I fit into the picture. My father was Barry Paul, he was the son of Leona Paul (formerly Mekelburg). She was the daughter of Elias Edward Mekelburg (known to family and friends as Eddie). Eddie's father was Abraham Mekelburg, whose brother was Isaac!

I would love to hear from either of you!! I loved reading this history and seeing the pictures!!

Since Andrea Blackwell's posts above, happily I have now chatted to her and I think that we are agreed that there were two Mary Mekelbergs in the family - her mother and my mother, who were first cousins - it can get a little bit confusing ! The photo in the above Spitalfields Life article which Andrea referred to (of Mary Hamburg and Mary Mekelberg) is the one which shows my mother as a young child seated on the chair, probably taken around 1917.

Further to my post yesterday, does anyone now still read this who can put me in touch with any of my relatives? I am Andrea Blackwell and was formerly Andrea Selwyn. My mother was Mary Mekelberg and my grandfather was Solomon Mekelberg. The only members of my family who I am still in touch with are my brother, Raymond Selwyn and one other cousin, Rosalind Mack (son of Edward Mack). Solomon had three children, Edward was the eldest, then my mother Mary and the youngest sister, Elizabeth. Ray, Rosalind and myself do not have any children, but I would love to hear from anyone who is still one of the family and with whom I have lost touch.

I can remember as children, we used to visit Mary Hamburg. She used to live in the Neasden area then.

I would love to hear from any of the Mekelburg/Hamburg families please.
