It included A for Aaargh, B fore the mast, C in all directions, D lousing, E for overboard, G zus wept, H ient Mariner, I I captain, R Jim lad, and best of all X marks the spot.

There must be lots of these about.

in the 1960s. He sang in folk clubs , mainly music hall songs especially those recorded by Gus Elen before the Second World War

R for Loaf is better than none
U for me

and to which we added

I for the engine
H for two one
V for l’Espagne
S for King cold

Now I know where it came from!

You might be interested to know that folk club performer John Foreman (aka the Broadsheet King) as part of his mainly music hall act, recites his version whilst paper tearing, using the Telegraph newspaper, which he tears with gusto!
