Fascinating. I’ll have to check it out when I’m in London, and eating out is allowed.

I wonder if Indian soldiers ate there during the war? I have written a book (called the Indian Contingent) about Punjabi Muslim sepoys in Europe in the Second World War, and I feel sure they must have visited the place.

I have been coming here for many years, and enjoying the restaurant with a regular group of enthusiasts. We absolutely adore the place. The staff at The Halal are lovely people, the food is wonderful, and this eatery is my first choice when it comes to curry houses to eat out in when in London.

I have been going since the branch was next to boots close to Fenchurch street for more than 50 years and always really wanted to get the exact recipe for lamb madras but Mahaboob could not reveal much apart from not to use too much spices. I live in Italy now and can only dream of the Halal restaurant / Abdul was always serving me they will remember me as I always use to go after the busy lunch period after a couple of pints opposite the pub ( White Horse ? I think?)
I can only hope that I will be able to visit again!!!!!!!! The samosas and the onion salad plus the chapatis the Meat madras & pillau rice are to die for – LONG LIVE THE HALAL!!!!!

Lovely article. I started eating there lunchtimes in about 1979 when I worked for a while at the DHSS office that used to be there. I was enticed by the wonderful aroma. It was very different then with wooden floor and bench type tables. The Pilau Rice was very different then with a more spice and peas, and my favourite dish as a non meat eater was Soya Meat Vindaloo which was sadly discontinued sometime in the 80s. They continued with Egg Curry though thankfully. I’ve been going there ever since though not as often in recent years. I’ll always be fond of it and hope it survives Covid19 and the Eastwards bulge of the city.

Great write-up as always!

I dined at this restaurant last night, and was really thrilled by the experience. I’d not heard of it before, and when we walked in around 7.30 pm, it was empty save for a table of three. I was tickled by the menu – just the names of dishes, no explanations – and the service was miles better than what you’d get in Brick Lane. A few other people walked in later, and our server took great pleasure in pointing out a gentleman who’d been visiting them for 66 years. Utterly amazing.

I have been a customer for 25 years, quite simply the best curry you will ever have.

The food is not coloured green red orange yellow it is curry served simply the best.

Go and find out how good this place really is from the value to the service and how packed with all nationalities.

Simply the best guys as you know keep going don’t ever let it go. Perhaps move closer to lloyds but if that happens I would end up a little larger and I can have that.
