Just discovered your site, think it’s fantastic..my daughter and spent a week in London last November, and spent a little time in the Spitalfields-Brick Lane area, your site really makes it come to life. I’ve spent the last two mornings learning about Grimaldi and Thomas Rowlandson, time well spent. Can’t wait to come back, keep up the good work.

I can remember a clown in the Hackney Empire when I was a child in the 1930’s singing “Father bring the hammer there’s a flea on babies eye”.

Another interesting piece – thanks! And fascinating that Grimaldi was born in Clare Market – which was the site or very near the site of the original home of the King’s Company, run by Thomas Killigrew, opened in 1660 in what had been Gibbons’s Tennis Court.
