When I visited the Tower of London a Beefeater guide told me that there was a couplet scratched by diamond(?) ring into a glass window -- started by Sir Walter Raleigh. It begins:
"Fain would I climb, but fear I to fall".
Elizabeth I finished the couplet by scratching,
"Those who fear heights should not climb at all."
Is that tale apocryphal? If not, is it a rather chilling comment on Raleigh's execution?

The last time I was in the prison tower, I found an inscription that said "Sir Richard Page 1690 In God There Is Hope"
Is there anyway someone can look for that and find it again for me?
I believe it was an ancestor. The Page's eventually were sent over to the coast of Georgia USA with General Oglethorpe to raise crops for King George in 1735.
Thanks so much

Supposedly an ancestor came with William the conqueror in 1066.

He is supposed to scratch his name into one of the bricks on the Tower of London.

I understand (from a second hand informant of dubious memory) that the name "Woodmansee" (or some variation) is also on a wall in the tower. Any truth to that? Thank you!

Hi there, Edward Smalley was a relative of my family and I would love to know if his graffiti is available to be seen by the public, and if so, do you know which tower it is and where I might find it please? My Dad is researching our family tree and I would love to be able to see this and take a picture personally for him! Thank you

Very interesting and moving inscriptions. It is very worthwhile to know why the prisoners were incarcerated and their grievances.
I am interested to know why Thomas Peverel should be in Beauchamp Tower. Next to his inscription is one of Charles Neville, Earl of Westmorland yet I cannot find that he was a prisoner in the Tower. Possible Thomas was involved with the Rising of the North against Elizabeth I as were the Neville family? Can anyone enlighten me please?
