Intrigued (posting here from the Isle of Man) to see the Three Legs of Man amongst your photographs. But no caption – it would be interesting to know exactly where in the City this sign is to be found. And even why?

The Gentle Author’s postings are a daily treat!

I noticed a small error in your article, no doubt a typographical error. It was Henry Pinkney, not Henry Pinkley, the goldsmith, who is associated with the Sign of the Three Squirrels. I love reading about old London. Thanks for your interesting article and thanks for listening.

Fabulous! My concern is; with all the bulldozing going on in London, are these treasures removed beforehand and stored anywhere? I doubt we find any of this kind of beauty on modern buildings, shame.

A marvellous collection of historical masonry work and art. We miss so much by not having the time to look at the wonders that are above our heads.

I have a request if that is allowed. Some time ago I found a picture in Images, of a doorway in the East End of London with Sail Loft written in stone over the door. I have not been able to find it again and it would be lovely if you could help as I have sail makers in my ancestors history. I am 78 and endeavouring to write a book about my family history.

Thank you

What a fascinating story about the signs of London., My ancestors, (I believe) had a sign of the hanging boot outside their shops and warehouses in Cheapside & Lombard St., they were John Hose circa 1730's and his son and grandson carried on the business of a cordwainer at 33, Lombard st. Can you add anything to the story.
