My two daughters, at the time both under 10, won the chance to open and close Tower Bridge in a charity raffle (under close supervision). I think I enjoyed it even more than they did and still bore people with the story.

A powerfully poignant moment for me as a 10 year old in the fifties and living in Spitalfields, was standing with my mother, brothers and sister on the banks of the Thames waiting for Tower Bridge to open. And it did, and it was magnificent, and I shall never forget it. So, to welcome us back to your world with this piece was, for me, just perfect, magic. Thank you GA.

Thank you for bringing a slice of London life to my inbox everyday! My sister and brother-in-law have both had the privilege and honor of opening Tower Bridge. You might check out her charitable trust (www.guyfox.org.uk)—she designed the Tower Bridge Passport for children (and grownup children—like me!) and the Tower Bridge poster (among many projects she has undertaken for them). Thanks again for bringing this American a little closer to the city where I would love to live (at least part time!).
