After a successful first sweep with David, our company decided on a flue lining installation for late October for which we paid a £3k deposit. It is now almost February and David still has not showed up. After months of excuses and phone calls apologising saying that he will be ready for the next week, we have decided to cut ties with him and would not recommend David to anyone as our experience with him was simply abhorrent and it’s no way to treat a client.

Needed my chimney cleaned before my new fireplace installation. Searched the Internet, called so many people who were all busy but then I came across David Dupre. He said not only can he clean my chimney but he can also fit my gas fireplace as he is registered, I thought result.
He came with his colleague and they started there work. He told me a few jokes and some life stories, happily ate my food and once he had finished he happily took £750 off him and went on his way.

A week later a gas leak was detected and it was from the fireplace. Surprise, surprise David had not connected the pipes properly and also used the wrong pipe fittings and he had not lounged the gas fire onto the concrete. He even told us to just put the coal on and start the fire which is a wrong thing to do as they have to be placed a certain way, you see David was in a hurry as he was going away on holiday. Anyway, I called a professional who stopped the leak and then called out another gas safe person who specialises in fireplaces to check David's work.

The fire place was not on properly and with one little push it moved. The guy immedisalry for to work and used the correct pipes for the gas fire, installed the fireplace correctly and then certified it all with his gas register.

Might I add that the gas leak was a severe one and during the day my wife and 6 month old son are at home so thank god nothing happened.

I called David several time and left him messaged until he finally picked up and said that he was going to come back and sort it all out after his holiday so he obviously knew he did wrong and when I told him he is not gas registered he didn't disagree. I have called him after to discuss compensation and have not heard anything.

People, if you are looking for a chimney sweeper or fireplace installer please DO NOT contact David Dupre. He is not safe, not registered and has no respect for any human being or their life.

He is being reported to gas safe who are not working on a case to stop him trading.

This story is a facinating nostalgic glimpse into an historic occupation. And it was a pleasure to to read that about an old friends progression as I knew both David and his late father.

Thank you for this story. It makes me happy that jobs like chimney sweeps are still around in these days of smart phones, satellites TV and all the other digital paraphernalia we are accustomed to. My own father was a french polisher and he used to do all his work by hand. It makes me sad that a lot of these crafts have been lost or are greatly reduced.
