I’ve only just found this thread on Max Levitus.
I lived in Blackwall Buildings in the late ‘50s-early’60s, with my grandparents, who used to fill and address envelopes for Max’s causes. I can vividly remember him talking to my nan, Jess about a rent strike he was trying to organise in Blackwall Buildings, because of the state of the flats and the landlords refusal to rectify any of the tenants problems.
Max was very well thought of by local people.

hello to Max and how wonderful to read of your strength and belief in a more just society, here in Britain.
I think you must have known my father, Jack Fishman's family, who ran the post office in Brick Lane until the 1960's. Dad always said he was a communist when a young man and was studying in Whitechapel Library. He qualified at the London Hospital and was a principled NHS GP all his life.
Sadly, he talked very little about the past, from which we hope to learn.

I remember Maxi [as my Dad used to call him] in Bethnal Green in the 60s when there were 3 Communist Councillars in the East End. I was only a child and we used to have Party meetings in our house. Great times and the campaigns against the Vietnam War were non stop.
Party people in those days were very special to us and our house was always full of those wonderful folk. Raising money and selling the Daily Worker and trying to improve the lives of working class people. Those days have never left me and are very much a part of me today.

Another beautiful portrait, Gentle Author! What wonderful, clear glimpses through history's dusty windows. I loved the account of the painted slogans, and the Battle of Cable St! Thank you! And all the very best to Max.
