Hi All, My old man took me when I was a kid to Aldgate (I am now 67) for some eels . In them days there was Barnies and Tubbies side by side stalls , I always wondered why but they both did well. I remember looking up from the road into the stall and remember seeing this giant of a man in Tubbies stall , friendly chap. Just got delivered my Cockney Caviar this week WOW there's nothing like it very subtle flavour then add your white pepper and non brewed malt . Never put butter on your bread it don't work. I get my pies from either Manzes or Goddards they aint bad , I just wished Kellys would sell on line. Living now up north now with my wife and her relatives all turn there noses up at the thought of them , I am glad has I do not have to share it with them . The lady asked about re-heating them , I had them the other day . Just warm them though the liquor for 3 mins then add them to you pie and spuds pour over the liquor HEAVEN . My old man will be turning in his ashes bless him. Keep safe.

Barneys jellied eels are the best in town I've been brought up on them for as long as I can remember and now 68yrs old and cannot find anyone who sells them since Tubby Issacs closed, but I was at a birthday party on Saturday and with the food spread was a bowl of Barneys jellied eels (hence never left them all night) does anyone know where I can buy them in SE23,se26 area otherwise I'm going to have to purchase a bowl but how long would they keep in a fridge.

Great to read about this traditional skill, and see fascinating photos. And very glad to hear about this fare could be offered to Olympics visitors (as opposed to junk food).

Is eel-sustainability an issue, I wonder?

Interesting news about <a href="http://www.fishupdate.com/news/fullstory.php/aid/15301/New_standard_for_sustainable_Eels_to_be_launched.html" rel="nofollow">new EU standard to support eel-sustainability</a>.

Great to see Barneys being featured. As a 'Northerner' I never tried jellied eels until about 2 years ago. In my ignorance I tried to eat the bones! Second time round was much better and I can't see why people are unfavourable about this great dish. At the end of the day it's a tasty fish and OK, if you're not au fait with the jelly, just eat more of the eel. Don't forget a liberal splash of vinegar some pepper and I like a dash of salt with mine (and of course with some bread, butter and a nice cup of tea). In the run up to the Olympics, we should be serving local London and British produce not bland, corporate trite like MacDonalds. Enjoy! Get down to Barneys soon!! (by the way, they sell a lot more than jellied eels). http://www.barneys-seafood.co.uk
