This is well worth a visit to see the archives of the actual silks and patterns and learn more about the weaving process. The archive includes films and interviews with the original workers.

It must be something like 30 years ago, when I was a teenager, that I went on a coach trip organised by the Bethnal Green Museum to visit a silk mill – I thought it was at Braintree but it might well have been Sudbury. It was part of a celebration of the museum’s collection of Spitalfields silk which also involved us visiting Dennis Severs house. Looking at the warping machine takes me back to Manchester in the early 80s when I did a degree in Textile Technology. We spent hours learning complicated mathematical formulae to work out the exact angle at which the threads of the warp should meet the loom. Not a skill I’ve ever used subsequently, mores the pity!
