I went to school in Spitalfields and grew up with beigels introduced to me by Jewish classmates (pronounced by-gals) not bagels, which spelling and pronunciation seem to have taken over and people think I am mad with my crusade to continue to pronounce the name correctly (at least as far as Londoners are concerned!).
