Although I am American, living in Utah, and having only just recently traveled to London and the East End, I loved this post. I run a small cabinet company here in Salt Lake and not only do I feed roughly seven feral cats and kittens. Among these little fur suits, I also count several skunks, a curious raccoon, and a Peacock! Imagine my surprise when I rounded the corner to see a glorious bird eating from the pile of dry cat food!

I love these photos of people. In 1958 I was learning violin at Sydney Conservatorium, and my teacher there was also a type of cat lady. She always had a bag of food and would make cattish noises to attract the strays in the public park nearby as we walked to the train station after my lesson (the last of the evening.) No one was to know that she had been a famous child prodigy with her sister and brother in the 1920s-30s.. the MacLean violin prodigies. All became recitalists and teachers. Hugh was killed by the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943. MY teacher had also taught my father as an adult in the 1930s. Georgina MacLean was a delightful, gentle and sympathetic soul, a brilliant violinist and teacher. At 84 I'm still playing in an orchestra. Wonderful memories of my own 'cat lady'.

I am becoming obsessed with your blog, this really took me back! I remember the Cat lady well, my sister and I used to chat to her regularly, she was quite willing to chat although usually it was mostly about cats, of course. I believe her first name was Mary and I think she came from Yorkshire but I will check with my family to see what else anyone can remember about her. She loved cats and she must have spent a lot of money buying food to feed them, there were so many feral cats in those days as there were so many empty houses - not like now!
