Very interesting read and lovely pictures. I have found my way here as I am trying to research a clock that has been in the family for 50 odd years.
The clockface gives the name as J Winterhalder & Co, and the address 99 Bishopsgate Street Without.
It is a real pity that your pictures are not of this property, as I would like to find out a little more about the clock and its manufacturer. I am guessing he was there late 1850's, as he is the grandson of the original clockmaker, but no idea if they stayed there until they closed down in 1920's or 30's.
If anyone could point me in the right direction to find more information, I would be eternally grateful. The clock has sentimental value to me, even though I only vaguely remember it last working about 57 years ago (long story).
I am brand new to all this, as I have never attempted to research anything on the internet, so any tips will be welcomed.
Thank you, Ian

My great great grandfather was a black musichall entertainer called Washington Davis. He lived around Spitalfields in the 1800's. An immigrant from America he was a double act with his wife, Mr and Mrs Washington Davis. He was also involved with the spectralscope which saw projected eery images onto the stage and he accompanied this with renditions about hauntings and ghosts.

His son my great grandfather never followed in his footsteps but became a herbalist in and around the area. He went under various names Walter Davis, Professor Poofum, Waller Davis to name but a few. He was arrested a few times for not having the correct stamp duties on his wares, but always paid the fines.

Have you come across their names and do you have any info on them?

Thanks for your time

Any record of a Lion Street in Bishopgate in 1861 (as found in a census record) - was it perhaps demolished in the late 1860s/early 1870s to make way for the Liverpool Street Rail Station or the new rail lines connecting it to Shoreditch? The nearest match I can find is White Lion Street (now named Folgate Street) running East off High Street Shoreditch - but this appears to be a little too far North and hence just outside the Parish of St. Botolph without Bishopgate. Any information gratefully received.

I am in the process of downsizing and am reluctantly selling off some of the vintage artwork that I own. I have a extremely fine ORIGINAL copy of John Tallis’s Street Views of London, featuring Regent Street, Regent Circus, Langham Place, and illustration of All-Souls' Church (No. 16). I purchased it already framed, with the accompanying pamplet attached on rear in glassine envelope. Please contact me if you are interested in purchasing and I will send several photographs. Thank you for your consideration.

Living in Western Australia but from the Midlands via London, I love your little pictures of Spitalfields life. An ancestor ran a Botanical Herb Warehouse in Union St East (Brushfield St) in the 1830s, her husband was a dyer/silk manufacturer.. do you know anything of herbalists around that time? I'm still trawling through all your vignettes of life there, it'll take me forever!
Thanks ... this is lovely!

Only one bookseller that I can see - William Clark at 170 1/2 Bishopsgate - he was still there in Kelly's Post Office Directory, 1846. And his is the only shop which appears to show an interior

Next door neighbour, George Campion, appears in 1830 in Sun Life insurance records MS 11936/525/1109583 8 July 1830 : Isabella Humphreys, widow and George Campion, 170 Bishopsgate Street without, surveyor

Many thanks for the Bengali stories, an interesting read.

I think you're creating a wonderful "Cultural Anthropology" file on Spitalfields - long may it continue.

Thank you
