I lived next to Syd's coffee stall in the flat at the top of Barclays Bank from 1963 till 1968. I remember Vic Locatelli that worked there. He was deaf, and I believe he caught malaria during the war and he suffered quite badly at times afterwards, as did so many. Vic and my family became friends. When I saw 16, he invited us to his daughter Lynn's 21st burthday party up in Stoke Newington where they lived. I met his family and got engaged to his eldest son Lee. Sadly we were not meant to be and we lasted after a couple of years, and I moved to Fleet Street in 1968 till I was married in 1970 at St. Brides to my present husband of 47 years. Never forgotten Calvert Avenue and the 47 and 78 buses that terminated there. I used to roller skate all around St. Leonards church yard and Arnold Circus bandstand. Happy memories. Thank you for bringing this to life.

I also worked at Normans at this time, late 50's in women's shoe dept on first floor. I also had to get the tea from Syds in my brown warehouse coat. We must have known each other

In the late 50's I worked for Norman - wholesale shoes just about a hundred yards away from the stall. All the departments got their tea from Syds and as the junior it was my job to take the teapot down and pick it up each day, I think we paid about 3d per cup. My lasting memories of Syd Jr. and his colleague (who ran the stall at that time) was that they were always immaculately turned out, their service was efficient and all was spotlessly clean - their tea wasn't half bad as well!

My Nan lived in Calvert Avenue and every Sunday morning I would go visit and stop by Syds for a cuppa. In the 50's on a Sunday there was nothing open anywhere to get a drink but I think Syds was.

My word! SL stories do gladden the heart... ‘daily medicine, wonderful story, it made my day, love this blog/these stories, living history, a daily delight, lovely writing’ etc - and love Sam’s comment too.
What an inspiring accolade these responses are. GA finding his own well-deserved place in history. May the rewards long exceed the creatively sustained effort.
The internet must be awash with others who silently feel the same fervent appreciation. Adding my thanks.
