Wonderful memories of Brune Street and the Soup Kitchen, I worked in our family business at Brody House in Strype Street around the corner from the Soup Kitchen, on a summers day you had the "delightful" aroma of the slaughtered chickens with the headless ones running around at the bottom of Strype Street at the junction of Wentworth Street and the chicken blood running in the gutter!
Mossy Marks deli in Wentworth Street, he would always give a little taster while waiting in the queue of his smoked salmon.
At M Brody we were pleaters, embroiderers and were at one time the largest sequin manufacturer in the world and also did fancy stitching and diamantes. At Xmas the number of gold watches given out for long service was enormous every year, men had started as boys, gone off to war and returned, Brody House, which is now flats, was one big happy family of wonderful East Enders.

Many people might remember Maurice Brody, a truly remarkable man, who was wheelchair bound with MS, but continued to work and never gave up, arriving at the factory in his chauffeur driven Cadillac's

Hi,

I've only just read this charming article concerning Linda Carney and her chance meeting with Kweku in Brune Street. My great grandparents lived at the very same "Jewish Soup Kitchen" address at 17-19 Brune Street back in the late 1870's and early 1880's - almost 100 years before Linda worked there. Back then the street was called Butler Street and at that time there wasn't any Jewish Soup Kitchen at this address. In fact a great uncle of mine (Joseph Mekelburg) and a great aunt (Amelia Mekelburg) were born at this very address !

What a coincidence !

I enjoyed this glimpse of 60's London, which is more real than the fantasy notion I have from old films and pop records, but still seems to capture the vibrant fun that such an era -- real or not -- represents.
