Have just come across the Spitalfields life website, being a student I must say these two guys have helped me in purchasing fabrics that would normally cost me three times the price had I gone to the normal suppliers, they seem to be from a bygone age and only want to help up and coming fashion student like myself and all I can say is thank you to Philip and martin.

ps maybe this little note will get me some sponsorship :-)

This place is the Aladdins Cave of fabrics!!! It is just magnificent, you will never find better prices and they have such amazing textiles, it has to be one of the best finds in London's East End!
The duo that are Philip & Martin are characters that you rarely see anymore and if it wasn't enough to walk away with a bargain, then there patter will certainly add a smile to your face.

As a keen dressmaker in my youth I used to spend hours with toy designs and later clutching my Vogue Patterns sifting through fabrics in shops in and around Spitalfields. The two that stick in my mind are one on Wentworth Street and one in Whitechapel on the stretch of road between the Sally Army and the Whitechapel Art Gallery. I think the former was called Harry Rothsteins but I may be confusing that with a dress shop (I remember paper bags, probably from Paul Gardners which carried a logo of a well dressed lady and the rhyme 'Look your best, exclusively dressed, Harry Rothstein declare, what my lady must wear'.) The other was called Zetolofskys and was run by a lovely man who insisted I call him Uncle Hilly. I started going in there when I was about eight and I vividly remember uncle Hilly's son Steve who was a British weightlifting champion hoisting me up on to his shoulders. I have walked past Crescent Trading on a number of occasions but was always too cowardly to go inside. Once I've finished my current Vogue Pattern I might just pluck up the courage!
