					<description><![CDATA[I remember the shop in Strype Street from thelate 50&#039;s/early 60&#039;s . . . my dad worked in Brody House opposite (which was the rag trade producing garments, sequins and fancy embroidery) so on school holidays I&#039;d come in with him and wander the streets all round.  The poulterer&#039;s was always an awful mess of feathers and blood and crates stacked in the street with a powerful stench you couldn&#039;t avoid !  
I&#039;ll never forget watching as a young lad whispered into the shop man&#039;s ear, then reaching into a crate he pulled out an egg, cracked it on the brick wall and swallowed the contents raw . . .]]></description>

					<description><![CDATA[Remember the chicken smell on Sunday mornings &#038; looking at all the live birds in middle of busy street market, how did workers survive the smell , i tried but didn&#039;t last , spent hours at club row &#038; petticoat lane markets in early 60s, 70&#039;s, 80&#039;s worked with many, records , leathers, jellied eels, Remember so much all the animals for sale in club row, sad to see owners sell there own dogs just to get monies, people sold whatever to get monies for the week  or even for a Sunday dinner that day, hard but happy times.]]></description>

A &#039;hard chicken&#039; is actually a &#039;boiler chicken&#039; used to make soup.
It has been the staple chicken of the shop since it opened, and
was tradionially used by the Jews of the East End to make chicken 
soup. Now many African customers use it for soup too.
